ABCD² Score for TIA

Transient ischemic attack (TIA)    is considered like a stroke and this means that a part of your brain for an temporary time has a lack of blood flow. If the blood flow is missing the brain cells develop a fault and they start to die. Tia (Transient ischemic attack)  is a medical emergency that is very close to ischemic stroke. The symptoms of TIA  and ischemic stroke are very alike but tia symptoms last for 24 hours and most of them go away in just minutes.

A clinical prediction for evaluating the risk of stroke for the following day transient ischemic case is the ABCD2 score.  The score is based on 5 parameters that are  :

  • Age
  • Blood pressure
  • Clinical features,
  • Duration of symptoms (TIA)
  • Presence of diabetes

Symptoms of a TIA

  • Partial paralysis or weakness
  • Speaking difficulties  or loss of speaking
  • Lack of control over muscles of facial droop
  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Memory loss
  • Headaches

Components and Scoring

ABCD2 score parameters each one of them is added together to get a score that ranges from 0  to 7. Interpretation of the score is estimated in three stages low, moderate, and high below will be an estimation for each stage and point.

      • Age ≥ 60 years: 1 point.
      • Blood Pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg: 1 point.
      • Clinical Features:
        • Unilateral weakness: 2 points.
        • Speech disturbance without weakness: 1 point.
      • Duration of Symptoms:
        • ≥ 60 minutes: 2 points.
        • 10–59 minutes: 1 point.
