Anion gap also known as serum anion gap, is an evaluation way to analyze the acidity of the blood. Blood acid levels that are too high or too low can indicate different medical disorders.

If your blood indicates that has an electrolyte imbalance or is too basic or acidic, the anion gap will show it. Acidosis is the term where your blood includes a high amount of acid. Also, you could get alkalosis which means your blood is very basic.

Calculating the difference between the levels of negatively and positively charged electrolytes in your blood is known as the anion gap. Your anion gap is the gap between them.

If you develop signs of acidosis or alkalosis,  your doctor might suggest an anion gap blood test. Depending on the root cause or condition, symptoms might change.

Acidosis symptoms might include:

  • Lack of breath
  • Confusion from Vomiting
  • Tachycardia (very rapid heartbeat)
  • Tiredness

Alkalosis symptoms might include:

  • Arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat)
  • The ability to irritate
  • Tremor in the hands
  • Twitching of muscles
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands, feet, or face

A blood test that indicates a large or low anion gap doesn’t may not always mean a medical issue because the results might be caused by electrolyte imbalance or testing mistakes. If it is necessary to confirm the diagnosis, healthcare providers may suggest further testing and request your medical records. Electrolyte balance may be maintained with regular blood tests. Speak with your provider if you’re worried about your results
