Fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) is the amount in percetange of sodium which is filtered by kidneys that than is released in the urine. FENa is not a test but is formula to calculate the blood and urine slat and creatine concentration. Both urine an blood samples are taken to the lab to examined because to make the calculation the results of both are needed.
This calculation can be imporantant for the evaluation for acute kidney failure on the factors for low urine extratrion. If the evalutiom indicates low fractional exretion which may indicate a reduction in effective circulating volume. Higher levels may indicate wasting of sodium and the reason may be to acute tubular necrosis or causes of kidney failure.
