Creatinine is a chemical result of your muscles’ energy-production processes. The regular breakdown of your muscle tissue results in the release of creatinine into the bloodstream. Healthy kidneys are in charge of removing creatinine by filtering to eliminate it from blood. Creatinine is a waste substance that your body excretes in urine. If your kidneys aren’t working properly, your blood may include greater levels of creatinine than usual.

The creatinine clearance test assists in the evaluation of renal function. The creatinine levels in blood and urine are compared during the test. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which expresses how efficiently the kidneys are filtering the blood, is specifically calculated using creatinine clearance.

The creatinine clearance of a person may be predicted by the Cockcroft-Gault equation using average creatinine clearance values that have been adjusted for age and body weight instead of urine data. Formula : Cockcroft-Gault mL/min = (140 – age) * (weight, kg) * (0.85 if female) / (72 * Cr, mg/dL)

Evaluation after calculating : 

  • Normal Kidney Function: 90 mL/min or higher for adults.
  • Mildly Kidney Function: 60 to 89 mL/min.
  • Moderately Kidney Function: 30 to 59 mL/min.
  • Severely Kidney Function: below 30 mL/min.
